How Can I Help My Kids Adjust to a Move?

Moving can be overwhelming no matter how old you are. Packing, living in clutter, transporting you, your stuff and your family from point A to point B… there’s a lot to handle. Not only do you have to organize your personal belongings, but there’s a chance you have to organize the kiddos in the family as well. The things that used to be second nature—from figuring out where to shop to finding the closest playgrounds—can suddenly feel daunting.

For children, this experience is even more difficult. They’re moving away from friends, their favorite wallpaper in their bedroom, their treehouse in the backyard. Of course, you want to help. This is how you can make your move easier on your little ones.

Why is moving so tough for kids?

One big reason kids are negatively affected by moves is because of what’s causing the move. Divorce, job loss or other family drama are common causes of a move. Children will associate moving with the negative feeling and situation.

Even if the move is for positive reasons, there’s a good chance kids will be leaving behind their best friends, neighbor kids and their favorite park down the street. It can be difficult for a child to see the positive side of moving.

How do I help my kids adjust to a move?

HAVE A CONVERSATION

It’s important to sit down and have a genuine conversation with your family about moving. Don’t just quickly drop the news and move on. There’s a good chance they’ll be sad or upset. Give them the time and space to ask questions.

VISIT THE NEW SPACE

Before you officially make the move, show your children the new neighborhood. Help them adjust by taking them to playgrounds in the area, their new school, the library… wherever you think will help your kids feel at home!

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

As a parent, it can be hard to put yourself first. But you can’t be patient with your stressed child if you’re exhausted. So make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well and taking time for yourself—it’s the best way to take care of your kiddos!

INCLUDE YOUR KIDS IN THE MOVING PROCESS

By including your kids in the moving process, it will allow them to feel like they’re a part of what’s going on. Give them chores to do, have them pack their own belongings… these things will let them feel more in control in a time of change.

DECORATE THEIR NEW ROOM WITH FAMILIAR ITEMS

Once you’re all moved in, try to decorate their new room with some of their favorite things from your previous home. Being surrounded by familiar things will help them feel at home and allow them to adjust more quickly.
